This week 2nd grade students explored the Language Arts resources on the Information Place website, including e-book site TumbleBooks. Students read picture books, chapter books, and nonfiction as they learned to navigate the site. Dorr Elementary has a subscription to TumbleBooks.
Last week students in Y5-1st grade explored the Early World of Learning website from WorldBook Online. The site is now free through the Michigan eLibrary, and has been added to the Information Place. Students learned about numbers, shapes, time, and more through this awesome website.
http://worldbookonline.com/ewol/home Stick Dog author Tom Watson visited Dorr Elementary on Wednesday to meet with our 3rd and 4th grade students. Mr. Watson talked about the process of writing his books and taught students how to draw the main characters. It was a great day! Young 5s and K students read Lucky Ducklings and Inside Outside for our Mock Caldecott Unit. We discussed the story and illustrations for both and students evaluated them on a scale of 1-3. This week we read Journey and Beginner's Guide to Running Away From Home for our Mock Caldecott unit. We discussed the story and illustrations in each book and students evaluated them on a scale of 1-3. For our Mock Caldecott unit this week, 1st graders read The Dark and That Is Not a Good Idea! We discussed the story and illustrations for each, and students evaluated them on a scale of 1-3. For our Mock Caldecott unit this week, 3rd and 4th graders read Building Our House and On a Beam of Light. Students evaluated each book on its story and illustrations. This week we kicked off our Mock Caldecott unit with grades Y5-4. We read and discussed books that have won the Caldecott award. The week of Nov. 11, students will begin reading and critically evaluating 16 of the best picture books of 2013. Students will score each book on quality of story and illustration. At the end of the unit, a Mock Caldecott winner will be selected. Click here for more information on the Caldecott Medal.
During the month of November we are celebrating Picture Book Month! We'll be reading and discussing some of the best picture books of 2013 as we begin our mock Caldecott project.
